What are Plugins?

If you are new to WooCommerce and web design, you might be wondering what plugins are and why you should add them to your website. Simply put, a plugin is a software addition to your website that allows for customization. Different plugins are going to offer different customization and features, depending on what and how the plugin was designed and intended to do. Therefore, it is not uncommon for websites to utilize more than one plugin at a time.

When customers come to your website, they won’t be able to see the individual plugins working, but they will see the results of what the plugins are capable of doing. For instance, plugins can aid in visuals, sound, animation, and videos. Plugins are easy to install and use, which provides you with the ability to customize nearly every aspect of your website without having to do any actual hard coding.

What to Look for in a Plugin?

Now that you have a general idea of what plugins are and why they are important to your website, it is important to know what to look for in a plugin. While there are a whole plethora of plugins available, offering the ability to customize so many different aspects of a website. But how do you know which plugins are right for you and your specific needs? Here are a few things to keep in mind when considering adding a plugin to your website or not.

The first thing to do is determine what you want the plugin to accomplish. Do you want a plugin that allows you to easily add pictures for your customers to see, or perhaps you’re looking for a plugin that can help to streamline your shopping cart, or maybe still you’re on the hunt for a plugin that can assist you in offering discounts and coupon codes to your customers? Regardless of what your end goal is, you first need to start with knowing what you want your plugin to do for your website.

Once you have determined what you want your plugin(s) to do, you can then begin to search through all the plugins available to find the right one. Different plugins are going to have different features that will define how and what you are able to customize with it.

Aside from knowing what you want the plugin to accomplish for you, it is also a good idea to rank the features you want, in order of priority. This will help you when sifting through various plugins, as you most likely won’t be able to find one plugin that checks all the boxes. Chances are you’ll find multiple plugins that not only check all the boxes but also work well together. When you find these various plugins, install them all! There is no limit to the number of plugins you can have on working on your website.

Another thing that you should consider when looking for plugins is the rating and reviews for each of the plugins that you are considering. Are they highly rated or do they appear to have a lot of bugs that need to be resolved? The last thing you want to do is install a plugin that isn’t up to the standards you were looking for, and have it not work and cause you more problems than it’s worth. Save yourself some time and hassle by looking into the reviews and ratings before you commit to any plugin.

Finally, what kind of customer support is offered with the plugin? Are there people to help you should a problem arise, or are you on your own to figure it out once you have it installed on your site? When researching plugins, pay particular attention to the support section of the plugin’s page, this will give you a good idea of the number of support threads that have been opened for the specific plugin within the last two months, and how many have been resolved. This will be a good indicator of how much support you’ll have if you choose to go with that particular plugin.

  1. YITH WooCommerce Compare

Out of the countless plugins that are available, the YITH WooCommerce Compare plugin is one of the most valuable and most important ones if you are selling products that have similar features. The YITH WooCommerce Compare plugin allows for products to be compared directly, side-by-side.

Setting up the compare feature for your customers to take advantage of is simple, and can be completed in a few steps. Once you have the plugin installed on your website, you will need to see the different attributes that you want to have compared for each item that you offer, then add the “Compare” button for customers to click on. And just like that, you are done, customers can then click on the popup that appears, allowing for them to compare different products right next to each other.

  1. YITH WooCommerce Quick View

There are many plugins available from YITH, including the YITH WooCommerce Quick View plugin. What this particular plugin does is add a quick view popup so that your customers don’t have to navigate all the way to the product page in order to add a product to their shopping cart.

Instead, a popup will appear, where they can add items to their cart, before clicking the “X” to close the popup and continue shopping. The purpose of this particular plugin is to eliminate the number of steps that customers have to take in order to be able to add items to their shopping cart.

As with most other YITH plugins the standard plugin is free to install and use. If you would like you can pay for the YITH membership, which gives you access to all of their plugins for the bargain price of $59.99 per year.

Who Should Consider the Plugin?

The YITH WooCommerce Quick View plugin is ideal for those brands who want to simplify and make the checkout process easier and faster for their customers. Although the idea behind the plugin is to simplify and make the process easier, sometimes the quick view tool can make a customer’s shopping experience more cluttered and difficult to navigate. Test out the plugin and ask for feedback from your customers before you implement it site-wide.

  1. Direct Checkout for WooCommerce

If you thought that the YITH WooCommerce Quick View plugin sped up the checkout process, wait until you see the Direct Checkout for WooCommerce plugin. This plugin has the ability to completely override the shopping cart page on your WooCommerce site. By eliminating this step, you are able to substantially speed up the checkout process, making it easier for customers to get to the payment section and commit to making a purchase.

The Direct Checkout for the WooCommerce plugin is free, with the option to pay $15 for an upgrade that will include additional features that aren’t available with the free version.

Besides the fact that the plugin is free and it streamlines the checkout process, here are a few additional features that I think you might like:

  • Can choose a one-page checkout process
  • You can customize the checkout buttons and text items
  • Can remove some of the checkout fields to make the process even faster for customers to fill out and complete
  • Customers are taken directly to the checkout page to purchase items, as opposed to having to go to the shopping cart first

Who Should Consider the Plugin?

Although this plugin is designed to make the whole checkout process easier and seamless, some will not like the idea of not having a shopping cart page. Even without a shopping cart page, customers are still able to go back and edit the number of items or remove items from their order if they choose to. Those who don’t mind not having the shopping cart can benefit from installing the Direct Checkout for WooCommerce plugin.

  1. Checkout Field Editor

If you want to be able to customize your checkout area by determining what fields you want to have and what you don’t need, you’ll want the Checkout Field Editor plugin. The standard fields for names, addresses, and payment information are still there, but because each company is different and unique additional fields may or may not be needed as part of checkout.

The plugin will integrate directly with WooCommerce, which then in turn creates a more versatile checkout area. You have the ability to edit current fields that are included with WooCommerce, along with the ability to add new fields, such as labels, placeholders, and names. Having the ability to customize the fields within your checkout area is important, especially for B2B companies that have customers who order regularly.

The good news is that the core plugin is free for everyone to install and use. There is also the option to upgrade to a paid version for $39 that includes more features. The premium version includes additional themes and additional fields that can be added to your checkout area, including numbers, checkboxes, and file uploads.

And so many more features that make this plugin truly one of a kind!

Who Should Consider the Plugin?

  1. WooCommerce Menu Cart

As a customer, there is not more that is more frustrating than not being able to see where you can add items to an online shopping cart. The WooCommerce Menu Cart solves that problem by adding a shopping cart button in the main navigation menu of your website.

The best part about this plugin is that even though some WordPress designs and themes don’t have a shopping cart icon that is easy to find, or located towards the top of the page, can rectify that by simply installing the WooCommerce Menu Cart plugin.

There is both a free version and a paid premium version of the plugin. The premium version will run you approximately $31 and includes additional cart icons, a cart flyout, and more.

WooCommerce itself does not have Stripe or any other payment methods, to allow for you to accept transactions. Because there isn’t a way to accept transactions within WooCommerce itself, you have to download a plugin, such as the WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway and connect to your Stripe account, in order to accept transactions through your website.

Free. The WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway plugin is completely free, with no upgrade or paying options available.
